What is the difference between Google Hangouts and Google Chat?

As we know, google shows Google Chat and Google Hangouts both in Google Apps access area. Someone gets confused about which one should be used for messaging and video calling.

Google has introduced a new instance of Hangout Chat called Google Chat consists of Google Workspace. The Google Workspace is the new version of Google G Suite and it has more features than the G Suite. However, they have changed the product SKUs with a new lineup such as Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, and Enterprise. 

Changes in Hangouts along with the Google Workspace.

Google has changed its Hangout Chat is to Google Chat and Hangout Meet is to Google Meet with the Google Workspace launch.

If you are using the free Google services such as the personal account of Gmail with @gmail.com, you have the classic Hangouts. Start Hangouts on the web at https://hangouts.google.com.

Over time, if you were invited to chat by someone using Google Chat at work or school, you would respond with either classic Hangouts or Chat on the web https://chat.google.com.

“Hangouts Chat” was the previous name for Google Chat. It does not refer to classic Hangouts.

Now, you have a Google Workspace account at work, school, or another group, you have Google Chat that is Google's newest product for messaging. You can start Chat on the web at https://chat.google.com.

Some of the companies and users might use classic hangouts, some use both Google Chat and classic Hangouts. The Workspace Administrator can put which you should use. 

We have seen a notice from Google;

Hangouts Chat is now Google Chat. You might temporarily see references to both names until this change rolls out everywhere.

Summary 

Google classic Hangouts is a different product for Google's free personal account Gmail users. It is not that Hangouts Meet and Hangouts Chat.

The Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet has been changed to Google Chat and Google Meet with the Google Workspace.
